  AFS/AMEP facilitates the creation, exhibition and exchange of art, primarily by children, in 25 countries on the themes of peace, the environment, hunger and social/personal issues.

  The Friends publicize library services, sponsor cultural and recreational programs (including music, art and literary events) and a Museum Pass program, and hold an annual fall book sale.

  The Gallery sponsors exhibits of contemporary regional artists during the academic year.

  These greenhouses date from the 19th century and house an impressive collection of plants, including showpiece Camellia trees and orchids. The staff offers workshops, plant sales and guided tours.   The Paine Estate is a National Historic Landmark owned by the City of Waltham. The Romanesque-Byzantime style house designed by H.H. Richardson sits on 113 acres of woods and is furnished with period decor. Available for rental for social and corporate events and for tours by appointment.   The museum features changing exhibits of contemporary artists as well as an annual exhibit of Boston-area artists. It has the largest permanent collection of contemporary American art in New England.
• The Vale (Lyman Estate) - 185 Lyman Street - 781-893-7232
  The Vale, a federal-period country estate owned by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, is open by appointment for group tours and can be rented for functions. See separate listing for Lyman Estate Greenhouses.

  This private, non-profit organization encourages citizen participation in and appreciation of the arts in Waltham, and sponsors cultural programs, including summer Concerts on Waltham Common, adult art classes, wreath-making workshops and community carolling.   The Commission awards proceeds from the Massachusetts lottery to individuals and organizations providing cultural programs and activities in Waltham. Applications are available at City Hall and are generally due in late fall.

  Founded in 1913, the Society meets quarterly to hear speakers and discuss history, mostly pertaining to Waltham.   The Association of Artists West, Moody Station, River Street and Waltham Studios includes about 60 artists working in the historic mill buildings on the Charles in downtown Waltham.
